Dishwashers
Certainly, the dishwasher has made life much easier for the busy household of today. Martin Appliance offers many brands, types, and styles of dishwashers.
When purchasing a dishwasher, you will need to consider the following:
Brands
Martin Appliance is a dealer of Viking, Miele, Dacor, Maytag, Jenn-Air, Bosch, KitchenAid, Frigidaire, Thermador, Amana, Whirlpool, and Fisher & Paykel dishwashers.
Types
Martin Appliance sells several types of dishwashers.
- Built-In: This popular dishwasher is built in the traditional style to fit under the counter.
- Portable: This dishwasher is mounted on wheels, and can be moved to the kitchen sink when needed. Conveniently, it can be moved from the kitchen area easily when it is not needed.
- Dishdrawer: This unit is available in two configurations – a single or double drawer. The single drawer can be mounted in multiple locations and at higher levels to allow for easier loading and unloading. The double drawer is similar to two dishwashers in one, allowing the user to run each drawer independently. For instance, one drawer may be washing china, while the other drawer is washing pots and pans.
- Counter top: This microwave-sized unit can be placed on the countertop and hooked to the kitchen sink when it is needed.
Capacity
The size of your family and your lifestyle will help determine the appropriate size dishwasher for your family.
- The Tall Tub: This popular choice is typically a 24” wide built-in under the counter model. It will hold 12 to 16 place settings depending on the dishwasher brand.
- The Standard Tub: This older style unit is less popular with consumers today. It will only hold 8 to 12 place settings depending on the dishwasher brand.
- The Two Drawer: This style will typically hold 10-12 place settings.
- The Countertop: This unit will hold only 4 place settings, so it is most appropriate for minimal use.
** A place setting includes a dinner plate, a salad plate, a cup, and a saucer.
Tub Materials
Dishwashers are available in several different tub materials.
- Stainless Steel: Many new models have stainless steel tubs. This material is more durable, resists stains and smells, and reduces noise.
- Hi-Temp Plastic and Colored Composite Tubs: This material will not rust and is generally durable. The plastic tub is more likely to stain and may absorb smells over time. The colored composite tubs hide stains better than the traditional plastic tub.
Racks
The racks in a dishwasher are made of heavy duty wire and then covered with a protective coating to prevent rust and to protect your dishes.
- Nylon: Nylon coated racks are the most durable because they resist damage, and cushion dishes well.
- Vinyl: Vinyl coated racks are less expensive than Nylon coated racks, but they also tend to chip and crack sooner.
- PVC: PVC coated racks are the lowest grade of coating found in dishwashers.
Cycles
There are numerous cycle options available to you.
- Pots and Pans: Provides extra “scrubbing” power to get your pots and pans clean.
- China/Crystal: Uses a gentler washing action and reduces time and temperature to clean and protect China or Crystal.
- Plastics: Uses a slightly lower water temperature to optimize plastic ware cleaning.
- Fast Wash: Shortens the wash and rinse times and saves time and water.
- Sensor Wash: Automatically adjusts the wash time according to the soil level of the dishes.
- Sanitizing: Uses a higher water temperature to kill germs.
- Power Scour: Provides a more intense water spray in order to clean tough food soil.
- Steam Cycle: Steams the dishes to loosen tough dirt.
- Upper Rack Wash Only: Saves water by washing only half a load.
Popular Features
There are a variety of popular features that you can add to your dishwasher.
- Child Lockout: Prevents children from operating the controls.
- Hidden Controls: Gives the dishwasher a sleek look by hiding the controls along the top of the dishwasher.
- Fully Integrated: Allows you to “hide” the dishwasher by installing matching kitchen cabinet panels on the front of the dishwasher.
- Water Softener: Softens the water creating better dishwasher performance.
- Digital Display: Shows how much time is left in the wash cycle.
- Time Delay: Delays the start of the dishwasher until off-peak times when energy costs may be lower or less hot water is being used in the home.
- Ultra Quiet: Uses extra insulation and a quieter motor and valves to reduce vibration and noise.
- Adjustable Upper Baskets: The baskets can be adjusted as needed with each use. This feature allows you to raise the upper rack when washing taller items in the lower rack and lower the upper rack when washing tall items in the top rack.
- Tiered Racks: These racks provide extra space for larger items.
- Fold Down Tines: These tines allow for more flexibility in loading large or oddly shaped items.
- Ball Tip Tines: These tines prevent cracks in the rack tip coating while protecting your dishes.
- Built-In Clips: Small clips can help hold small and light items in place.
- Cup Shelves: These shelves increase space efficiency in the upper rack by allowing you to double stack your cups.
- Stemware Guards: Protects delicate stemware from getting damaged.
- Utility or Caddy Racks: These racks are designed to hold a variety of culinary tools.
- Adjustable or Split Silverware Baskets: Allows for more flexibility and efficiency in placing items into the dishwasher.
- Separate Silverware Trays: This tray at the top of the dishwasher completely eliminates the bulky silverware basket in the lower basket and allows more space for dishes in the lower rack.
- Condensation Drying System: This removes the lower heating element from the bottom of the dishwasher and has internal water heaters, so that plastic dishware can be placed in the bottom basket.
A Special note on dishwasher performance: Most new dishwashers use much less water than older dishwashers did. Because of this, water quality has become a big concern. If you have “hard” water, your brand new dishwasher may fail to meet your expectations in properly cleaning your dishes. It may also cause scale build up in your dishwasher over time and further reduce wash performance. Because of this, Martin Appliance will check your water quality when installing a new dishwasher so you can protect your investment and enjoy the top performance in your new dishwasher.
