Size -
Before purchasing a refrigerator you will need to determine the appropriate size unit for the space. Measure the width and height of your current opening to see what size refrigerator will fit. You may also want to measure the depth of your space.

Capacity -
The capacity of the refrigerator that you choose will depend on a number of factors. How many people live in the home? Do you like to entertain? How much food do you prefer to keep on hand? A general rule of thumb is that the capacity needed for two people is 18 to 20 cubic feet. For each additional person, add at least 1 cubic foot. Also, fresh food and freezer capacities can vary from model to model and brand to brand. So, if you are looking for more freezer or fresh food space, make sure to check this even if they have the same cubic foot rating.

Types - There are numerous types of refrigerators.
  • Standard Depth: Standard refrigerators are the most common type found in most homes. They tend to extend out past a 25” counter top by about 5-8”.
  • Counter-Depth: Counter depth refrigerators look more built-in than the standard refrigerator. Typically, only the doors of the refrigerator will extend past the cabinets. This can be a great choice if you have an island or other cabinets that limit space in front of the refrigerator.
  • Built-In: Built-in refrigerators give a very sleek and high end look to your kitchen. They do not extend out past the cabinets at all and can be completely hidden from view by having your cabinet maker install matching wood cabinet panels over the fridge door.
  • Under the Counter: This type is great for kitchen islands, dens, offices, and bar areas. They are usually built into cabinets and can vary widely in applications such as storage for food, beverages, specialty wine cabinets, or a combination of these. They come in refrigerator drawer configurations, single doors, glass doors, or some can have wood panels attached for a built-in appearance.

    Door Configurations -
  • Top Mounts: have the freezers on top and the refrigerator on the bottom. The freezer is usually easily accessible, but the fridge may require bending down to see what is in the fresh food area.
  • Side-by-Side refrigerators: give you easy access to the refrigerator and freezer area. Many of these will also have the option of ice and water dispenser in the freezer door, which is a very convenient and energy efficient way to get your water and ice without having to open the refrigerator doors. Wider items may not always fit as well in this configuration.
  • Bottom Mount refrigerators: give great access to the fresh food area while requiring some bending to access the freezer area. Some models also have the option of having a water or water and ice dispenser thru the refrigerator door for your convenience.
  • French Door refrigerators: are a bottom mount freezer layout with two smaller doors on the fresh food compartment for easier access to your fresh food. Some models are also available with a water or water and ice dispenser thru the door for your convenience.

    Shelving -
  • Spill Proof Glass Shelves: They prevent spills from spreading throughout the interior.
  • Adjustable Shelves: They give you flexibility to store larger items and on some models the shelves can be adjusted while they are loaded with food just by turning a small crank.
  • Adjustable Gallon Storage: This type of shelving is usually located on the door of the refrigerator and will hold gallon jugs. This will free up valuable shelf space and give easy access to your gallon containers.
  • See-Through Bins: This feature makes it convenient to see what is in the crisper bins without having to open them.

    Features -
  • In-Door Water Dispensers: This very convenient feature allows you to get a drink or dispense water for your cooking needs. Also, many models combine this with an ice dispenser as well for even more convenience. You no longer have to open the refrigerator door to get a cold glass of water or open the freezer door for ice.
  • Water Filter: This will tend to give your water that is dispensed at the refrigerator a better flavor since the filter is designed to remove the chlorine taste. The filter system built into the refrigerator will not completely purify your water. Instead, we recommend a reverse osmosis purifier that will give you bottled water quality water right at the fridge door. Please see www.martinwater.com for more information.
  • Fast Fill Water Dispenser: Several models have a water dispenser that will fill your container at a faster rate than normal. They may also measure the amount of water you want dispensed in your favorite sports bottle or a recipe that requires just the right amount of water. They will also accept larger containers than a standard dispenser.
  • Dispenser Lockout: This keeps from children from unauthorized dispensing.
  • Humidity / Temp Controls: This feature will help extend the shelf life of your food. You can adjust the crisper bins to the proper humidity to extend the fresh life of fruits and vegetables. Also some models allow you to control the temperature of the bin as well for items suck as lunch meats, fish and other temperature sensitive items
  • Quick Chill / Quick Thaw: This feature can be a big time saver when doing meal preparation. It allows for safe thawing of meats and the quick chilling of items.
  • Door Alarm: This feature alerts you if the door is left open for an extended period.
  • Dual Evaporators: This allows for better control of humidity in both the freezer and fresh food compartment. This will extend the shelf life of your food.
  • Digital Controls: This allows you to see, at a glance what temperature your refrigerator is set at.
  • Slide-out Shelves: This allows easier access to items near the back of the refrigerator.
  • Icemakers: Most refrigerators do have provisions to add an icemaker in the freezer area.

Finishes -
The most common finishes are Black and White. Some models are available in the bisque color. Also, Stainless Steel or the “Stainless Steel Look” is always a popular choice. In addition, you may choose to have a wood panel install to get a very integrated look.
