When purchasing a range hood, you will need to consider the following:

Brands

    Type
    • Vented: This type of hood has a pipe that extends from the hood to the outside of the house. This is the ideal way to prevent unpleasant smells and excess heat in the kitchen. However, it is sometimes difficult to place vented hoods in a kitchen because the placement of the hood in the kitchen does not allow piping to run to the outside of the home.

    • Re-Circulating: If you are unable to place a vented hood in the kitchen, the re-circulating hood is available for you. The air that is pulled into the hood is then re-circulated into the kitchen. Re-circulating hoods use filters to remove grease and vapors from the kitchen.
    Style
    There are many styles of hoods and ventilation systems.
    • Standard Range Hood: This common hood is fastened to cabinets above the range. They are typically anywhere from 4” to 7” tall with widths to match the width of your cooking appliance.

    • Chimney Hood: This hood is typically mounted on a wall or over a kitchen island, and offers a more stylish design of a canopy with a duct cover connecting the canopy to the ceiling. This style of hood generally offers the most powerful performance available in kitchen ventilation.

    • Custom Hood Insert:This style will allow your kitchen ventilation system to blend seamlessly into the kitchen.

    • “Pop Up” Hood: This ventilation system is perfect for the kitchen island or anywhere you want ventilation without a large hood. Push a button and have it “pop up” and ventilate, and when you are done cooking, push the button again and watch it disappear.

Airflow Performance
Ventilation systems are often rated by CFMs (cubic foot per minute of airflow). Typically, if the number of CFMs is high, then the hood will perform better. CFM ratings on hoods can range from 100 CFMs to 1500 CFMs. Feel free to contact your Martin Appliance professional to help determine the airflow needs of your specific appliance and area.

    Additional Features
    • Halogen Lighting: Create a brighter light and more pleasant work area over your cooking appliances.

    • Heat Sensor: Automatically turns on the fan when it senses high heat, and will continue to operate until the temperature is reduced.

    • Multiple Fan Speeds: This feature allows just the right amount of airflow without having the extra noise.

    • Filters: Carbon filters are available on some re-circulating hoods to reduce the odor of air being released back into the kitchen.

    • Multiple Lamp Setting: Allows you to set the lighting to the brightness of your choosing. The night lamp setting will allow you to have a soft light in the kitchen at night.

    • Exterior Mounted or Inline Blower: Remove the noise of the blower from the kitchen, by placing it in the basement, attic or the exterior of the home.
